This artisan bakery produces some of the finest bread in East London. Located just off the Regent’s Canal in Haggerston, it’s well worth your while to pop in here for some fresh sourdough (or a cookie and a pastry) while you’re loafing along the towpath on a lazy Saturday. Check out their website for their full range of loaves, which include two kinds of sourdough, oliver and herb, walnet, seeded, rye and vollkorn. There’s even a little seating area for you to sit in and enjoy a cuppa and a bite.
Make sure you get here early on the weekend, though. The breads have been known to sell out quickly!
A part of the Hackney mental health charity, the Centre for Better Health, the bakery offers 3-month work trainee placements to people recovering from mental health issues. So you can tuck into your bread content in the knowledge that it’s been lovingly created by someone who is turning their life around.
And if you want to get more involved in this great projects, BHB is always on the lookout for volunteer bakers to support their training programme and artisan bread production. This is a fun and engaging opportunity for someone who is passionate about real bread and supporting good mental health in the local community to gain experience in a thriving social enterprise.
The Centre for Better Mental Health also runs two other social enterprises: a bike servicing and sales company and a manufacturer of polyuruthane healthcare products.
Here’s what they said
All our bread is made using traditional methods and with natural ingredients to produce a satisfying honest loaf. We don’t use any additives or preservatives in our products only flour, wild yeast, water and salt. To gain the depth of flavour in our bread we give it plenty of care and the time it needs to prove and bake. We hope you enjoy the results and are always keen on your feedback.
