Bisecting the beaten path of Old Street and City Road, this social enterprise cafe is great for those looking for something a little less hipster. It’s a bright space with high ceilings, large windows and ample seating, complemented by a little-known roof terrace – a must for the summer months. The large breakfast and lunch menus makes this a good option whatever your budget (insert usual London caveat here) or dietary requirements. There’s melts and vegan soups for under £4, freshly made frittatas, a wide selection of salads and a hearty vegan or meat hotpot for those with large appetites. Worth a visit for a weekend brunch, too. For more food choices, check out the weekday and weekend menus.
Plenty of plug sockets and spacious tables will delight freelancers, although a word of warning: the wifi can be a little temperamental.
Central Street Cafe is part of St Luke Trust – a charity and community centre striving to improve the lives of residents who live in and around South Islington by offering a safe and inclusive space. All profits from the cafe go towards covering costs of providing over 11,500 (2015 figure) tasty, healthy and high-quality meals for elderly Islingtonians each year. The cafe also ethically sources its food, using organic and fair trade products wherever possible and pays its staff at least the London Living Wage
