Healthy fried chicken might sound akin to alchemy, but Tottenham’s Chicken Town is on a mission to prove it can be done. This not-for-profit eatery offers the full range of crispy delights you’d expect from London’s best chicken joints, except with a third less fat and half the saturates. (In case you’re wondering, the secret is to steam the chicken before flash frying with rapeseed oil).
Expect to find six variations of burger (including vegan and veggie options), your choice of pieces cooked in three different kinds of breadcrumb, Korean hot wings… and of course, no such place would be complete without mac and cheese. These are complemented by healthy sides made from superfoods like sweet potato and kale.
As for the setting, it’s not what you’d expect from the typical fast food joint. Based in a beautiful old Victorian fire station, there are floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious interiors… and even a lovely little outdoor patio with benches for a summer munch.
The big idea behind Chicken Town is to offer a healthy, sustainable – and above all, affordable – alternative to the traditional chicken shops on the high street, helping to tackle the obesity problems that plague the local area. Profits from its evening trade go towards subsidising the £2 Junior Specials for local school kids. And beyond providing a healthier alternative to fast food, it also partners with high-profile restaurants (think Polpo and Clove Club) to provide training and employment opportunities to young locals, as well as leading a wide range of charitable projects in the community.
The food is also sustainably-sourced – the restaurant only uses herb-fed, free-range and cruelty-free chickens, and sources its veggies locally.
Here’s what they said
Chicken Town is a fast-food restaurant with a difference. We serve great-tasting fried chicken to eat in or take away. And we do a whole lot more too. We think that sometimes fast food doesn’t need to be so fast. So we like to think of ourselves as a relaxed, date- and family-friendly restaurant. If you want to linger over your meal, we have a beautiful dining room where you can make an afternoon or a night of it. And if you fancy a drink, we have a bar where you can savour Tottenham’s best locally brewed beers.
Chicken Town’s aim is to provide food that tastes good and is nutritious and healthy. The secret to our fried chicken is in the way we choose and cook our meat. All our birds are herb-fed, free-range chickens from Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales – we think they taste much better than battery-farmed animals. To create the succulent chicken morsels with a crisp coating that everyone loves, we gently steam the meat before marinating it in buttermilk, covering it in a Panko crumb, and flash-frying it in rapeseed oil.
The reason this great food doesn’t hurt your pocket is because of the way we run our business. Chicken Town is a social enterprise, which means that we use what we earn to keep our prices down and benefit our local community.
