Paper and Cup is a cosy little cafe with bags of character… a quirky complement to East London’s burgeoning social enterprise cafe scene. Yes, there’s good coffee and excellent cakes. But there’s also a huge bookshelf full of second-hand books for sale on the cheap (including some surprisingly rare editions), which is constantly refreshed and updated from Spitalfrields Crypt Trust charity shops and generous donations. So for the keen bookworm, there’s always a reason to pop in for a long read and a latte.
It’s on a quiet-ish street, just of the busy Kingsland Road. And with the wide patio and outdoor seating, Paper and Cup is a good spot to bask in the rare London sun.
The Cafe’s parent charity is Shoreditch Crypt Trust, which provides practical help, support and training to people who have been homeless and suffering from addiction, poverty or social isolation. SCT’s social enterprises play an integral in the recovery journeys of their service users. You can read some of the stories of these journeys here.
Paper and Cup also runs a number of events focussed on homeless people, including Homeless Book Club. Check out this write up from last year. The cafe also showcases (and sells) the artwork of local artists every two months to help put money back into the parent charity.
