Launched after a whirlwind crowdfunding campaign, The Sound Lounge in Tooting (South West London) was hailed as great news for the city’s independent music scene. It has rapidly become one of the best places in South London for live music. Gigs take place on an almost daily basis, showcasing some of the best local and international musical talent in a purpose-built venue that rivals some of the city’s more commercial establishments. And if all that top-notch music makes you a bit peckish, then there’s also a cracking vegan café, bar and restaurant, specialising in quality ethically and locally sourced food.
A not-for-profit social enterprise, The Sound Lounge’s mission is to support both its local community and the independent music and arts scenes.
In addition to providing a platform for emerging, independent artists, the venue runs a wide range of social initiatives. For vulnerable adults and young people, there’s a free AQA-accredited training programme in sound engineering, barista, and community event management, helping them get their lives back on track. Then there’s free family workshops, weekly friendship coffee sessions for people suffering from isolation and drop-in surgeries with community police. The Sound Lounge also offers up its space to support local charities and to host fundraising events.
